Education

1968 Obtained Abitur (school-leaving certificate giving right of entry to university) at the Ulricianum grammar school in Aurich

1968- 1974 Studied psychology, education and political science at the University of Hamburg

1974 Qualified as a graduate psychologist

1976 Passed second state examination, qualifying to work as a teacher in vocational schools in Hamburg

 

Professional career

1976-1994 Senior teacher at the College for Social Pedagogics of the Vocational School for Child Care in Hamburg, specialising in nursery teaching

1983 Joined ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS, manager of the Pinneberg county branch for several years

1986 – 1992 Member of Halstenbek local council, chairman of the ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS group on Pinneberg county council

1992-1994 Spokesman of the executive committee of the Schleswig-Holstein Land branch of ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS

1994-1996 Member of the German Bundestag

1996-2000 Minister for the Environment, Nature and Forests and Deputy Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein

2000-2002 Member of the Schleswig-Holstein Land Parliament

Since 2002 Member of the German Bundestag

2002-2005 European-policy spokesman, spokesman of ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS on the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union, member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Transport, Building and Housing.
